I'm definitely looking forward to attending this exhibit in Toronto!

The Art of Victorian Photocollage
June 5 to September 5, 2010
Art Gallery of Ontario
This exhibition showcases the little-known phenomenon of Victorian photocollage. Organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and curated by Elizabeth Siegel, it features more than 40 of the best albums and loose pages from collections across the United States, Europe and Australia -- many rarely, if ever, seen in public before.
With sharp wit and dramatic shifts of scale, these delightful collages upend the serious conventions of photography at that time. They also reveal the accomplished hands and educated minds of their makers -- taking on the new theory of evolution, addressing the changing role of photography, and challenging the strict conventions of aristocratic society. And while these unique compositions may seem wonderfully odd to us now, they are actually perfectly in keeping with the Victorian sensibility that embraced juxtaposition and variety. They also offer enduring inspiration for photographic experimentation today.

Narwhal Art Projects is pleased to present Atlas Findings, a group exhibition negotiating new possibilities in modern landscapes. Leon Benn, Jacob Whibley, Megan Whitmarsh, Paul Wackers, Tessar Lo and Peter Mettler offer peripheral views from distant lines, sharing explorations of modern landscapes through painting, collage, embroidery and film. Their constructed environments form six unique visions of the world surrounding us, communicating unique perspectives ranging from joyful optimism, futuristic imaginations, deep introspection, insightful observations and terrifying realities.
Exploring the theme of interstitial spaces, Jacob Whibley's collages show geometric and organic forms in a suspended moment of transition. Drawing inspiration from modernist design and unfulfilled histories, Whibley assembles each collage through a process of successive movements and emphasizes the contrast between found and intentionally crafted elements. These tactile moments allude to structural and topographic forms as they shift and reconfigure towards newer possibilities.

Sorry for the late notice on this one, it's hard to keep on top of shows when they're happening all the time! If you're in Dallas Texas, be sure to check out the joint collage/polaroid show with work by Matt and Mary Emma Hawthorne (a personal favourite) at Bows and Arrows.
Featuring works by Dallas artists Matt Hawthorne and Mary Emma Hawthorne
On view through February 19th, 2010!

Thought I would let you know about Eva Han's solo show going on right now in Dusseldörf, Germany (Jan 29 - Feb 19, 2010). I have always been a fan, and her new work is really something. Here's a review from her website:
Artist Eva Eun-Sil Han's work of poetry and geometry goes for a visceral response
By Lennie Bennett, Times Art Critic
Eva Eun-Sil Han definitely has both sides of her brain engaged. "Measured Emotions," an exhibition of her work at C. Emerson Fine Arts, has poetry and geometry at work. The artist collages photographs, her own and others, often drawing and painting onto the paper. Many of them seem purely abstract and in most, the assemblage of images is in such bits and pieces they don't seem meant to be discerned specifically. But Han is going for a visceral response from us (that's the "Emotion" part of the show's title), whether it's a response to the cut-and-paste drama of her constructions or the provocative glimpses of recognizable body parts. She doesn't give us any hints since all are untitled.

Upcoming collage show tonight if you're in Chicago—wish I was there to see this, I love Chad's retro-feeling collages. (Apparently there are over 50 new pieces!) Also congratulations on your first solo show, I know it will be a success!

New Works by Chad Kouri
January 8-24, 2010
Chad Kouri is a stuff junkie, glue and adhesive enthusiast and a procrastinator. Chad spends most of his time in alleys looking for treasures to build out his found-art collages and illustrations. The rest of his time is spent writing emails to people he has never met and other things to pass the day. He is a member of Chicago art collective The Post Family. This is his first solo exhibit.
Opening Reception for Both Exhibits
Friday, January 8, 7-10PM
with music by DJ Sean Doe

The pursuit of truth, absurdity of morality and irony of inhibition is the content of {ths} new show ‘For All is Vanity’ and follows his ‘Trash urban warfare porn dirt style pop’ style. His new canvases are the continuation of his 'Gluebooks', a selection of sketchbooks containing collage and filled with handwriting, rawness, dirt & pornographic images. His new work feels like a gigantic resized version of his Gluebooks from paper to canvas. An enlargement both in size and insanity. Hail to the King, Baby.

I don't usually post about my own work on Notpaper, but I don't think there is any harm in doing so to promote my first solo exhibit! If anyone is in Toronto this Friday, please stop by to meet me and to see my work in person (or come and check it out until November 12th. Read on for more information.
Entitled “The Royal Family”, this mixed media collage series was inspired by a pair of scrapbooks found at the St. Lawrence antique market filled with newspaper clippings of Queen Elizabeth and her family during the 1950's and 60's. Aprile's collages recreate the scrapbooks, changing the composition and adding materials to give each page a deeper meaning. All of these pieces are created on the actual scrapbook pages themselves, resulting in brittle and delicate collages which further the character and feelings of nostalgia in each piece.
Aprile had tried many different artistic mediums but her restlessness always led to back to collage work where she feels most comfortable. She loves assembling, disassembling, and rearranging the compositions as well as creating contradictions and versatile interpretations for viewers.
Originally from the Niagara area, Aprile moved to Toronto to pursue a career in graphic design. In the future, she hopes to obtain work in print media and has a special interest for visual displays. Though she loves computers, she's a bit stuck in the past, with a penchant for rebelling and doing things the "old-fashioned way” and tries to mix as much collage into her design work as possible.
A fine collection of English cheeses and drinks will be served starting at 8PM opening night. Come out and enjoy the artwork, atmosphere and a little taste of monarchy!
So please visit me Friday or see my work anytime until Nov 12th!

Paper cuts is a group show opening at Little Bird Gallery in LA this weekend. What really caught my eye was the graphic—nobody knows paper cuts like we do, right? I thought it might include more collage artists than it does, but it does at least include one, Will Bryant. He's a student who has been guest blogging for poppytalk, and his work is pretty great. I've included some images below.
I'm glad that I attended the 6th annual Square Foot Show in Toronto yesterday, at AWOL Gallery (100 Ossington), because there were so many different styles and techniques on display. Including, an important one for this blog, collage! I was excited to see how many local collage artists there are, and now I find myself wanting to know more. This year was the biggest show ever, and I am definitely going to participate next year.

In the above images, #1 is by Alex Cirka, and #3 by Hyein Lee.
So here's a little review of what we saw. Sorry about not giving credit where credit is due, but the list I wrote of the artists was misplaced today. (So if you are one of the artists of these fantastic collage works, feel free to let me know).
