1000 journals project - Notpaper

1000 journals project

"This is an experiment, and you are part of it."

Last weekend, I went to a screening of 1000 Journals, a documentary by Andrea Kreuzhage. I am so glad I dragged myself out of bed at 11 in the morning on a Saturday to see this film's first Toronto screening at the Moving Image Film Festival (there were only about 8 people there)! I have known about this project for a while, as most of you probably have as well, but for some reason I am so much more intrigued by the project after watching the documentary. A woman who received one of the journals and was featured in the film was present to chat about it, which was an added bonus. And collage artist Julie Sadler (from Collage Clearinghouse) was in the film. Apparently, there were 60 hours (I think) of footage shot for the documentary, which was shaved down to 90 minutes.

The 1000 Journals project was launched in 2000, and is still ongoing. One thousand journals were left in random places or given to people, but as people started to hear about the project, they wanted to get involved. People were dying to get their hands on what seemed like so few journals, and so a website was started to help track the journals. Now, you can view scans of the them, which include writing, drawing, collage, and other things, and check up on their progress. Warning, this website can be very addictive!

The creator, Someguy, finally got enough journals back (about 40) to put them in a show at SFMoma (which runs from November 1, 2008 - April 5, 2009. I wish I lived in San Francisco, and if you do you should definitely go see this.

There is also a beautiful book published (by Chronicle) on the project, which I purchased today.

AND,
There is another project started called 1001 Journals. In this one, users can send out their own journals, so that more and more journals can reach more and more people. I will be starting a journal, which anyone can participate in. My only request is that it be filled with collage! I'll post the link where you can sign up to receive the journal as soon as I can.

Learning to Love You More - Notpaper

Learning to Love You More

I know that this project may be old to many of you, but after reading Miranda July's book "No one belongs here more than you" I was interested in her work yet again. Her website Learning to Love you More is a collaborative project with regular people. I thought this might interest you because there are a few that I find pretty "collage-y," like the one where you ask a friend to point out all the things that they want in a magazine and you make a collage of it, or where you cover up only part of a photo album page. It inspired me a little to try some new techniques, and I am probably going to make a contribution. You should too!

Assignment #28
Edit a photo album page.

Look through a friend or relative's photo album. Choose a single page that includes details that you find interesting. Take a piece of solid-colored paper that fits over the entire album page and cut one to ten holes in the paper that reveal details of the pictures. These details can be parts of people's bodies, their pets, a cake, a poster, anything you find visually intriguing. These holes should be small, just isolating the details, with holes that are the shape of the thing you are isolating (cake-shaped hole, tiny hole isolating just someone's head, etc.) Give your page a title that includes the name of the person who's photo album you have used. For instance "Erika's trip to Florida," or "Dave and his dog Walter at the Beach."

Assignment #56
Make a portrait of your friend's desires.

Ask a friend or relative if there is a catalogue that they want things from. Maybe it is J. Crew or Facets Multimedia or Toys R US. Get a copy of this catalogue if your friend doesn't have one. Then ask your friend to look through the catalogue and point to everything they really, really want. Not just want, but really, really want. Put a mark next to each of these things. Maybe there will only be two or three. Maybe there will be many. When they are done, carefully cut out each of these things, cut out the objects only, do not include anything surrounding them.Glue them on to a piece of colored paper. Do not write anything on this paper, but scan it and send it to us, along with the name of your friend and their age.

6x6 Collage Project - Notpaper

6x6 Collage Project

Do you remember the post about the 6x6 collage group last month? Well, in that post I suggested that they try to do three way collages instead of two, and seeing what two different people would do with the same materials. I did this exchange with Shelley and Karine from the group, and this is the first set of my collages from Karine's materials. This is part one, so part two will be my second set of collages, and part three will be the results of all of the collages together.

This is a very fun exchange and if you are a member of Flickr I highly recommend taking part in this group.

The most exciting thing about this exchange for me was the beautiful Letraset transfers that Karine and Shelley both sent. I have found a new love! I will be putting these up in my Etsy shop this week.
