Light offers a means of creating relationships between architectural surface, and the nature of perception. This is a distillation of space. Challenging existing formalities within architecture through a flirtatious act, inherently both aggressive and accommodating.

Laurie Kang's work is a constructed abstraction of reality that uses photography, sculpture, collage, video and installation. Engaging in various media is the result of reacting and responding to the history and medium of photography, in which her formal background is based.

Jacob Whibley's collages show geometric and organic forms in a suspended moment of transition. Drawing inspiration from modernist design and unfulfilled histories, Whibley assembles each collage through a process of successive movements and emphasizes the contrast between found and intentionally crafted elements.

As a ceramicist working in sculpture and installation, Naomi Yasui's current interests revolve around the psychology of domestic objects and the history of ceramic industry in Europe. She employs early industrial ceramic practices to create objects of ambiguous utilitarian function.

This exhibition explores the use of collage as an artistic medium, dissecting its impulses and agendas while providing a wide cross-spectrum of its usage in contemporary art. It addresses the role of material culture in mediating our shared view of reality, the notion of a borrowed aesthetic, and how specific visual agendas express differing cultural attitudes. It includes a variety of mediums and aesthetic agendas, presenting not only traditional collage, but works which establish a collage mentality in the liminal forms of photography, video, digital manipulation, painting, sculpture, printmaking, children's books, commercial signage, portraiture, and others. In the end, it will posit collage as a cause, rather than a symptom, of both artistic style and generational meaning.

This exhibition will focus on contemporary collage and will showcase a large number of works by an international collection of artists. In Cutters/Cork James Gallagher, a collage artist himself, has brought together over 50 artists from all over the world to illustrate the range and depth of collage taking place today.

This exhibition is the third in the Cutters series (Brooklyn in 2009, and Berlin in 2010), and will continue to showcase the excitement of the newly invigorated art form of collage.
