Raquel's collage journals were completed back when she was in high school, and they're pretty teen angsty. They remind me a little of my first collage book, so I like them. I would love to see more, newer work from her, because these journals have so much potential.
Name (Real or Screename): Raquel Kalina
URL (Blog, Website): staringattheceiling.org
Location (Where are you from?): Toronto, but currently living in Los Angeles.
Q: Describe your work in 10 words or less.
A: Uncensored, diary-like, colourful, paint splattered, imperfect.
Q: What do you like to work with (magazines, photographs, vintage)? Be specific!
A: Magazines, photos, textures, label makers, duct tape, newspapers, paint, stabilo pens, white out... etc.
Q: How long have you been creating collages and what made you start?
A: Grade 5. I'd collage my trapper keeper so it wouldn't look like everyone else's.
Q: Are you solely an artist, or do you work in another profession?
A: I'm studying Art History, and working as an assistant. Collaging is more like a personal thing for me.
Q: Do you have any formal art training?
A: College Art courses.
Q: Explain your favourite techniques.
A: Nothing really. I usually just journal in my thoughts or feelings, then cut and paste things to emphasize that particular statement. A lot of the journal pages that I have up on my flickr are pretty much old—while I was in high school... a freshman in college... etc. I haven't had any time to work on any new pages recently. It's driving me crazy because I think so much has happened since I made those. I was such a different person back then. Now, I have a better outlook in life, and see the world in a whole new perspective. Things are happier. I think it will reflect in my collage/journal entries—when I get around to posting them.
Q: Describe your favourite piece ever created.
A: A handmade polaroid book with individual pictures of my friends and random strangers, with their personal statements, quotes, dreams, and "inside jokes" scribbled/cut&pasted within the pages.
Q: What other artists do you admire?
A: Julia Bereciartu, Linda Zacks, Lina Scheynius, Michel Gondry... tons!
Thanks Raquel!
