darren luchmun

"The more mess the better really," is a statement I thought surprising for a digital artist to say. Darren's works do have a vintage look—even though the techniques he uses are fairly new—which must be a result of his desire to find old things to make new again. Whatever his personal preferences when it comes to handmade or digital, I feel that he really understands collage from either technical point of view.

Name (Real or Screename): Darren Luchmun
URL (Blog, Website): http://darrenluchmun.deviantart.com/
Location (Where are you from?): England

Q: Describe your work in 10 words or less.
A: Romantic, Random, Poetic, Fun, My thoughts on paper.

Q: What do you like to work with (magazines, photographs, vintage)? Be specific!
A: I love walking in to charity shops and flicking through old books, magazines, postcards, anything basically that looks old and worn. Every Sunday I go to the local boot sales where I sometimes find really nice postcards and old photos which people don’t want anymore, I love finding new things and random images, I found an old typewriter for £2 which is amazing. I also use my own photography and hand drawn images, but incorporate old textures into the images and layer them up to give it a kind of vintage look.

Q: How long have you been creating collages and what made you start?
A: I started around 4 years ago, just after I came out of college and had no job, so I just sat at home making images to pass the time.

Q: Are you solely an artist, or do you work in another profession?
A: I’m studying to become a illustrator, so fingers crossed.

Q: Do you have any formal art training?
A: I’m studying at the moment to become an Illustrator/Graphic designer, I also studied multi-media in 2002 but that was more to do with TV and film not much art.

Q: Explain your favourite techniques.
A: I love to experiment and find new ways of image making. The more mess the better really.

Q: Describe your favourite piece ever created.
A: My favorite piece so far is, If No One Can See Us. I like this one because me and a few friends worked on the piece, I love to collaborate with different people and get loads of different styles in one piece.

Q: What other artists do you admire?
A: The list is endless, at present my favorites would have to be, Nate Williams, THS, Adrian Johnson, Garret Morin and Mike Perry.

Thanks Darren!

I like the hands that look like a spine at first glance.
