The flickr 6x6 Collages (started by Guylaine Couture and Marie-Chantal Turgeon) group invites all of the members to create and post their collages there. The catch is that the materials used in their six pieces of artwork are not their own, but have been sent to them by another group member.

Members are partnered up internationally, and they send each other 6 sheets of paper (that are 6"x6") and other materials to collage with. The images are then posted to the group!

What I think is really great about this group is that you are creating images that are part of a cohesive set, where one piece flows nicely into the other. Also, throwing you right out of your comfort zone is an excellent strategy for collage artists. Using other people's materials will make it obvious that you do have a particular style, and that whatever you are given will not matter. Here is what some of the group members had to say about being a part of the group:

I love being part of this group. My partner was artist Sofia Barao who lives in France (I'm in Los Angeles) and my favorite parts were: opening up her package and seeing all the great things that she sent; and seeing what Sofia created with the papers and items that I sent her. We didn't know each other at all when we became partners, but now I think of her as a far-away friend.—Shelley

What I like the most about having collage partners is that each time I make a series of 6 collages, I cannot repeat what I did before. Each series are unique because the materials coming from different people every time—Karine

For me this group is like a surprise, something I don't even think of working with and suddenly I have many ideas of what I will do. And working with material we don't choose forces us to do something new. It's a funny challenge each time. And it's also so much fun opening the envelope like a gift!—Ginette

I would like to see something like a three-way partnership, where doubles of the same papers or cutouts are sent to members. It would be exciting to see the differences between the final collages.
